Cookery Books

Every Christmas Jamie buys me a new cook book. A subtle hint or what? Usually it's the cook book of the TV chef I'm currently watching (I love to watch cookery shows). So as I put this year's Nigella on the kitchen shelf along side the other 17 books, I decided I would start actually using those books. So at least once a week now I pick a recipe to try out. To get Jamie into the spirit I started straight in the dessert sections with relative success - in the last couple of weeks he's been treated to white chocolate mouse and little chocolate pots. All made from scratch!
Last week's recipe test was "cullen skink" and I've never made anything that looked so much like the picture in the book (yes, I was so chuffed with myself I even took a pic).

This is going to receive a little tick on the book, it was easy to make and very tasty (it's basically a smoked haddock and potato stew). Tried, tested and recommended.

Where did the name Cullen Skink come from?

the name of this rich, tasty soup comes from the fishing village of Cullen, in Morayshire. "Skink" is a soup made originally from a shin of beef. But in this case, the main ingredient is smoked haddock. Traditionally it is made with Finnan Haddock which needs to be skinned after cooking.
